MARIKO

Clicking the deadbolt in place, I turn and lean against the door. The steel is cool against my overheated body. Holy crap. I kissed Ace Carney. And he kissed me back.

I slip my shoes off and, still feeling weak kneed, stumble my way along until I can fall onto the couch. My phone and keys slip from my hand onto the cushion next to me. I feel both of my roommates watching me.

Erin mutes the television. “What happened to you?”

“You look like you got fucked hard for once.” Vanessa cackles.

Erin shoots a cautionary look at our roommate before turning back to me. “Are you okay?”

“Technically, yes.” Physically? No. Emotionally? No.

“What does that mean?” Vanessa asks.

Picking up a throw pillow, I hug it to my chest. “Have you ever kissed someone and felt like your life was forever changed?”

“Nope.” Vanessa shakes her head.

“I haven’t either, but I wish I had,” Erin replies.

“Well, I just had the kiss of my life. I don’t think any other kiss will ever measure up. It felt like my entire body was vibrating with electricity.”

Vanessa snorts. “Call me a skeptical biatch, but I think you’ve been reading too many romance novels.”

“Who did this kiss happen with?” Erin asks. She knows I don’t run around kissing random people. And she also knows that I’ve never been the most sexual person. I lost my virginity my junior year of college with a friend who was in the same situation as me. While there wasn’t any romance between us, he and I had an agreement to experiment with each other and it served its purpose. We both got to see what we were missing out on (not much in my opinion) and we unloaded our burdensome virginity.

“It’s someone I met through my sister.” I keep my reply vague.

Erin twirls a long lock of hair around her finger, her eyes never leaving me. “How long have you been going out with him?”

“We’re not going out. We’re friends.”

“Do you kiss all your friends?” Vanessa asks. “Because I feel slighted if you do.” She puckers her lips, making kissing sounds.

I throw the pillow in her direction and she deflects it with a squeal. “I didn’t plan on kissing Ace either, but it happened.”

“His name is Ace?” Erin asks, and I nod.

Vanessa holds up a finger. “Wait a sec. You kissed him?”

“Yeah. He was leaning in to kiss my cheek and I turned my head.”

“The old turning your head trick. I got my first kiss by doing that.” Erin laughs.

“I only did it because I keep getting vibes from him but he never seems to make a move on me. I got sick of waiting and took things into my own hands.”

Vanessa nods. “You go, girl. There’s nothing wrong with a woman making the first move.”

Tipping my head back on the couch, I stare up at the ceiling. “I’m glad I did. At least I think I am.”

“What’s to regret?” Erin asks. “You did say it was the best kiss you’ve ever had.”

“It was.
